About Harakati
Our Mission
We exist to increase access to dignified work, produce traceable specialty products, and educate consumers toward meaningful and ethical consumption.
Our Story
The Harakati Coffee program was originally designed to provide the skills needed to start and grow on a career path in coffee right in Dar es Salaam and throughout Tanzania. The program started in 2017 and initially provided monthly, week-long skills training in basic barista skills, job readiness, customer service, and other relevant hospitality/service sector soft skills. Now, Harakati serves the community as a social enterprise by continuing to offer high quality skills training and through the development of value-added, sustainable products.
Harakati is derived from the Arabic word "harakat" meaning "movement". From the time a seed is planted, it's in constant motion as it is grown, harvested and processed - all the way until the final product is in your hands.
Our Values
Job Creation and Income Equality
Creating jobs and providing viable, liveable wages for our employees is at the core of Harakati's purpose. As a social enterprise we value our people over profit, and that drives our desire to see more jobs created and workers dignified.
Value Addition
We believe that by adding value to products, we increase livelihoods across the value chain. Harakati is in the business of developing pathways to market for smallholder farmers by ethical sourcing for our value-added products and making a space for other local products in the marketplace.
Community Impact
Harakati began as a way to engage young coffee professionals to develop their skills and ready them for the job market. We are exploring ways to expand our social impact into other areas that support communities and create opportunities.
Farm to Cup
We are committed to valuing every part of the coffee journey, from the farmer who plants and harvests all the way to the local consumer.
